Fuel crisis hinders ambitions of captive power
Haldia : Captive power players—companies that set up their own power plants in order to supply energy to their manufacturing operations—have for the last few years hoped to outgrow their boots and become major power brokers on the national stage, supplying power to the grid, amongst others. At the end of 2011, 19,509 Mw of captive power generation capacity was added — around 10 per cent of the country’s total generation capacity of 186,655Mw. Many of them already send more than half of what they generate to the grid while others hope to effect a similar transition.

Yet, those plans and ambitions are beginning to take a back seat because of an acute shortage in fuel supply that till now rocked their...

Haldia, Feb. 16: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Biman Bose today came under fire at the CPM state conference over the land policy pursued by the Left government, with a section of delegates saying the “unnecessary haste” in acquiring land for industry was the main reason behind the Assembly poll debacle, sources said.

“Some delegates from Hooghly (where Singur is located) today slammed Buddhababu and Bimanda for our government’s land policy. They said both the leaders had adamantly and unnecessarily pursued the policy of acquiring land by force to set up private industry. The delegates said this faulty policy was the main reason why a big chunk of the poor moved away from the Left...

Buy CESC: Motilal Oswal
Haldia : Brokerage Motilal Oswal has given a buy recommendation on CESC.

CESC's reported PAT for Q3 of FY12 at Rs 74 crore (down 33 per cent YoY) was much lower than our estimate of Rs 150 crore. "We had factored in a hike in tariff rates, which is not yet approved and to that extent recurring PAT would have been lower by Rs 0.8-1b. Our interaction with the management indicated under-recoveries of "non-fuel" items (fuel increase is passed through on monthly basis). Pending tariff order (TO) approval, the management has created a provision to the extent of Rs 35 crore, on the back of conservative policy and prudence," the brokerage said.

Polymer prices increase as RIL shuts units for maintenance
Haldia : After repeated price cuts last year, polymer manufacturers have increased prices of polypropylene (PP) by Rs 3 a kg and polyethylene (PE) by Rs 1 a kg with effect from on Thursday.

This follows a decision by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) to shut three of its units for annual maintenance, coupled with firm global prices. Prior to this, Haldia Petroche-micals had shut its units for annual maintenance. Industry sources have cautioned the price rise is not propelled by demand in the domestic market but mostly by cuts in capacities by producers of polymers.

Imports have also become expensive, due to a surge in demand from China, Taiwan and Japan . These markets have been...

Haldia Dock: Light at the end of tunnel still dim
Haldia February 5, 2012:

A few days ago, the performance of Haldia Dock (under Kolkata Port Trust) as well as the progress of projects in the pipeline was reviewed at a high-level meeting at Haldia presided over by the Union Minister of State for Shipping and attended by senior officials of the port.

There was little to cheer about the performance, it was revealed at the meeting. The traffic throughput so far in the current fiscal has been lower by around 10 per cent vis-à-vis the same period last year.

While iron ore is considered the major villain, the throughputs of a few other cargoes too leave much to be desired. Thus, there has been nearly 50 per...

OC's diary holds clue to killingsin Nandigram?
HALDIA: After former CPM minister Sushanta Ghosh, CID now is spreading its net around CPM's former Haldia strongman Lakshman Seth and a host of East Midnapore CPM leaders. But the long rope police extended to its officers in the Garbeta skeleton case just by suspending three officers for their alleged role may not be possible in the Nandigram recapture case.

Critical to the investigation is a general dairy entry (GDE) on November 8, 2007 by none other than the Nandigram OC, detailing who'd ordered police to remove the picket on Tekhali bridge just two days before a CPM-led "recapture" bid that left nine persons dead and 15 injured and exposed the involvement of the police top brass in the incident.

Govt may bring back resigned cop

Haldia management in a bind as losses mount
While the promoters of Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL)—the West Bengal government and The Chatterjee Group (TCG)—squabble over ownership and control, the firm’s management led by managing director Partha S. Bhattacharyya is struggling to avoid reporting the company as potentially sick.

Bhattacharyya’s efforts to pare losses have been hobbled by recurrent plant shutdowns. The firm is facing the fifth shutdown since the former chairman of Coal India Ltd took over the reins on 1 April. The company’s engineers blame the snarls on faulty implementation of the capacity expansion programme, internally called Project Supermax, on which HPL had spent at least Rs.1,300 crore.

Light House at Phool Bari

Near Phool Bari old canal there is an old Light House which is now inside the boundary of HFC.
Now this is not in use, surrounded by jungle, even I could not locate the position standing at the Hooghly river bank. Local people who were living in the villages before the foundation of HFC, still remember its existence. They saw the person used to come to the light house for checking the lighting system and replacing the empty gas cylinders.Red ,Green & yellow light was blinking at...

Where is "Tupi Ghar"?
This is located at Nayachar and the only brick-made building in this island..Local fisher men call it "TupiGhar" because of its "dome" like shape.
This is the Office of WB Govt (dept.of Fisheries).

Oh, Gokul - you have made the mistake!!
Ultimately Gokul Refoil demolished the oldest temple for the sake of their plant.
It's a shame to us that we can not save our heritage place. It could have been transformed to a tourist -spot for the visitors at Haldia, but we simply forget it and allowed to demolish the spot.

View of the river Haldi

Only the river knows why people called it "Huldee".
In the official documents of British period, the spelling for this river was written as "Huldee".
Some people say , its water is yellowish and this is the reason of its name.

"Kukra hati" is it market for Hen/cock ?
Once the principal town town of Doro pargana had a big market at Kukrahati. Even today the market exists in a different form. It's near the river, near the village and often sailors landed here for purchasing of hens/cocks & vegetables. Heard from the elder people that in early 1900 s, people used to go to the market with their bulls burdened with rices & returned home with vegetables, salts ,chicken etc.

1864:cyclone & Doro pargana
In 1864 AD devastating cyclone killed 3/4 of its population at Doro pargana. Farmers lost their land due to saline water. Very few people were alive to receive the Government aid.

Kukrahati Khas Mahal

Once this place was full of sound ,now deserted-only few cattle roam inside and cow-dung cakes show their status to the nearing house holds.
The light and sound is no more. The old building is still living in the haunted history of past.
